Born in Guatemala in 1891, Carlos Merida spent most of his life in Mexico becoming one of the first artists to explore geometric abstraction and surrealism.

From 1908 to 1914 he studied in Paris, and was influenced by Picasso and Modigliani. In the 1930's he did a series of work memorializing native costumes. He is also noted for his many murals in Guatemala and Mexico.
