A well-listed painter, illustrator, and print maker, Ferdinand Bergdorff was born in 1881 in Cleveland, Ohio, and was educated at the Cleveland of Art, followed by Paris, France studying under Rene Menard and Florence Este.

In 1907 he moved West, and lived for a time in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before settling in Carmel, California, where he worked for many years as an illustrator for Sunset Magazine. His work is in the DeYoung Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Oakland Museum and the Yosemite Museum, amongst others. He died in 1975.
