A listed Missouri painter known for his paintings of landscapes and coastal views, John Sites Ankeney was born in 1870 in Xenia, Ohio, he studied at the Art Student's League in New York, as well as in Paris and other parts of Europe.

He became a professor at the University of Missouri, and later was the curator and director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Dallas. He exhibited his works widely in the Midwest as well as New York and Chicago. He died in 1946. There is a Salmagundi Club, Thumb Box Exhibition label affixed verso.
