A
well-listed painter, commercial artist and printmaker, Karl Baumann was born
in 1911 in Leipzig, Germany, and started to draw when he was five years old
with no formal training.
He emigrated to the United States in 1929, at the age
of 18 and became a commercial artist. He became a painter with the WPA
project in 1939, and exhibited his works at the Golden Gate International
Exposition, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, the San Francisco Museum of
Modern art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He died in
1984.
