Mabel Alvarez was a well listed California artist who was a leader in her early advocacy for Modern American art.

Born in Oahu, Hawaii in 1891, she moved with her family ultimately to Los Angeles and studied art with James McBurney and Stanton MacDonald-Wright, among others. She exhibited her work widely and became a well-known member of the Group of Eight. She died in 1985.
