Mabel
Alvarez was a well listed California artist who was a leader in her advocacy
of Modern art.
Born in Oahu, Hawaii in 1891, she moved with her family
ultimately to Los Angeles and studied art with James McBurney and Stanton
MacDonald-Wright, among others. She exhibited her work widely and became a
well-known member of the Group of Eight. She died in 1985.
This painting came from a private collection in Los
Angeles and was exhibited at the Bellflower High School in 1960, and at the
Mission San Juan Capistrano in 2000. The frame was crafted by Ted Gibson of
Hollywood, California.
