Mabel Alvarez was a well listed California artist who was a leader in her advocacy of Modern art.

Born in Oahu, Hawaii in 1891, she moved with her family ultimately to Los Angeles and studied art with James McBurney and Stanton MacDonald-Wright, among others. She exhibited her work widely and became a well-known member of the Group of Eight. She died in 1985.

This painting came from a private collection in Los Angeles and was exhibited at the Bellflower High School in 1960, and at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in 2000. The frame was crafted by Ted Gibson of Hollywood, California.
