Born in 1927, Raymond Howell was a listed African-American painter,
printmaker and photographer known for his modernistic paintings of city
scenes, landscapes, and portraits of celebrities.
An Oakland, California native, he was a fixture in the San
Francisco Bay area scene for over forty years. His 1965 painting entitled
"The Brown Family" was shown at the opening of the Oakland Museum and was
later purchased for the museum's permanent collection.
In 1999 Stanford University presented a retrospective of
his work. He died in 2002.
